About Me
Introduction I’m Jonathan, a student with a passion for art and photography. It’s always been my vast dream since I was a child to become a great artist and express my opinion to the world. Art has always inspired and motivated me because of the messages behind them, to think that a single picture, a single piece of art can tell a life changing story I find is incredible. When I create my art I always try to think about if it has a story, if the photo doesn’t have a story then what’s it trying to say? A single photo can speak a thousand words, but the question is, will it be heard? That is the single most important question I’ve asked myself and it has allowed me to go more in depth in the photos I take. Through the past few months I’ve learned that art is a way of life, without art our world would be less than bland. Art is the reason we have beautiful bridges and nice schools to electric cars and birthday cards. Each of these photos I’ve chosen from my collection has a story that unravels before your very eyes, enjoy.
Artist Statement - Soul Loopers When I started writing this story last year I had a vision for an immersive story with illustrations that would enhance the storytelling experience. For the longest time, I’ve wanted to create an illustrated novel of some kind, whether it was a comic book or a light novel. So as the opportunity to illustrate my novel in progress arised I knew I had to take the chance. For the lack of digital drawing and character creation skills I had at the start of the product I’d say my project came out fantastic.
For the first couple of weeks I focused on designing some of the essential characters for the story. This was crucial for the entirety of the novel to have the protagonist's appearance nailed down to a fault. After this stage was complete, I drew the base sketch for the first illustrated page of the novel. It included many panels to help convey the intended image and meaning of the text. Soon after, the sketch was brought into Photoshop and I began my rather long work period of completing the page. Progress was slow at first but as the days went by my work progressed faster and faster as I learned from my mistakes. By spring break, the page was almost completed. I was behind schedule but it was a fair price to pay for the quality I wanted to achieve. During the break I sketched what was going to be the second page of the novel, simple it is, but everything I needed, it was. The day I came back I was more than eager to complete the second page and was finished rather swifty in comparison to the first page which still needed minor touch ups. With the early mornings and after school hours I spent at school the progress of the pages accelerated and was completed not too long after. Despite how much I lagged behind this project constantly I have learned some valuable lessons regarding the art medium that makes it all worth it. A deeper understanding of digital drawing and how to use an extensive amount of the tools in the softwares of Photoshop and Illustrator gained, I have. Along with this, I have subconsciously learned some principles regarding the illustrated novel artstyle. This project was my first experience on the digital illustrated novel artstyle, as such, I’m quite pleased with how it came out all things considered. |
